Screenplays

I wrote my first screenplay in 2008, I think. It wasn’t that good, but some of the pieces made it into “Blaming George Romero.” I collaborated on a second screenplay right after that, which was okay, but went nowhere.

Then, in 2009 I wrote two feature length screenplays: “Langsomer Tod” & (when I realized I couldn’t afford to produce a full-on WWII Horror movie) “Blaming George Romero.” We filmed BGR in 2010, and then almost as soon as that was finished, I moved on to “Red Scare.”

After “Red Scare” was finished, NBF worked with shorts and our webseries, “Lost & Found,” and then my brother Isaac told me I should write a feature length farcical romantic comedy. I told him that he should, and he did, and that became “Cabin of Errors” (now available on Amazon Prime!) Around this time I was also working on “Yellow Scare” and “Green Scare” and Isaac was also working on “Cabin of Errors 2!!!”

And a funny thing has happened with these scripts… Each one is better than the one before it. When I finished “Yellow Scare,” I thought, “I love this script. It’s the best thing I have ever written… But what if this is the best I can do?”

Thankfully, it wasn’t. I am even more proud of the screenplays we have written since then.

Isaac raised the bar with hilarious monster comedy “Monster Mash.”

Then, I finished my original take on a romantic comedy with “Off Script,” a screenplay that I am VERY happy with and excited about.

Not content to sit idly by, Isaac then jumped onto a murder mystery comedy (Think Clue but in today’s world and no board game connections) with (the tentative title) “You Are Invited.” I just read the first draft and offered my notes on it… And it is hilarious and will only get better.

While we usually work on our own projects individually, and offer notes, we have also begun trying to collaborate more.

The first instance of this was “Murder on the Southbound,” a supernatural murder mystery on a train. For this one, we literally took turns writing sections of the script. We are in early talks to having “Murder on the Southbound” adapted into a graphic novel… But more on that another time.

Speaking of collaboration, Isaac mentioned an idea a month or two ago, and I ran with it and just finished the first draft of it the other day. “The Tragic Life of Timothy Finch” is a dark fantasy-horror feature.

Finally, what might be my favorite screenplay I have written to date is also the one that would be the hardest to make. About a year ago, I turned on the TV to see the terrible “Haunted Mansion” movie… And I thought, “Someone should really make a good ‘Haunted Mansion’ movie.” And sure, there is always talk about one being in development, but nothing has come of it yet… So, I said, “Fuck it!” and I wrote my own feature length “Haunted Mansion” script. I am very proud of this one, and am doing some polishing of it, even though I realize it may never get made. (If you have any connections with Disney, get me in the door with them — PLEASE!)

We would love to produce them in-house, but each one is more expensive than the last (not to mention we can’t make one because it’s a Disney property)… But we are looking into other ways to get them made.

And there you have it… The Platizky Brothers currently have a grand total of 8 feature length screenplays in various stages of completion… And we are only getting started.

Art Isn’t Free

It seems like an easy concept, but not everyone gets it.

Art isn’t free. You can’t go into a supermarket and expect to walk out with a cart filled with food without paying, right? Why should you expect to walk up to an artist and get their work for free?

Whether you’re a painter or a sculptor or a filmmaker or a writer… Whatever you do… It is worth something. And people need to respect that.

Now, of course there are exceptions… Just learning how to do what you do and just want to get the experience/credits? Close friends with other artists and want to collaborate with each other? Go for it… but if someone does YOU a favor and works for you for free? You better as hell do them a favor if/when the time comes.

We at NBF are filmmakers of all different kinds… We are writers and producers and actors and sound recordists/designers and editors and musicians and directors and cinematographers, etc. Those are not simple jobs.

Since we started, we’ve regularly been approached by people we barely now who expect us to leap at the chance to either work on their projects for free or… even worse… Pay for their projects to get made.

Not everyone understands how much work goes into making art… I can tell you: It takes a lot. It’s not cheap. And it isn’t as easy as some people assume. It’s with that in mind that we will provide a list of how to work with artists.

1) NEVER assume an artist wants or has to work with you on your project. Artists have their own projects that they want to work on.

2) It is okay to reach out to artists and ask if they want to collaborate.

3) Don’t ask someone you barely know to produce your project for them… and NEVER EVER ask them to pay for your project.

4) It is okay to inquire how much an artists’ services may cost. NEVER assume that the art will be cheap or free.

And that’s pretty much that. Now, go do art!

Festival Update 5/9/18

YS POSTER

I have not updated in awhile. Since my last post, we have become Official Selections at three more festivals.

We will have our festival premiere on Saturday, May 19th at 2pm at the Hoboken IFF.

In addition, we are an Official Selection at the 2018 Auckland IFF in New Zealand, the 2018 Gen Con Film Festival in Indiana (alongside “Click Send” the horror short we made with Maniac Productions), and the 2018 Comedy World Network IFF in Las Vegas!

We had a slow start to the festival season… Apparently, “Yellow Scare” is a “polarizing comedy.” Some people see it and absolutely love it, and others don’t appreciate our specific brand of humor. You can’t please everyone… We knew going in that it might not be for everyone, and some people might even be offended,  but hopefully we are just now finding our audience and the festival love will continue.

Much love!

On Saturday, May 19th at 2pm, “Yellow Scare” will be making its film festival premiere at the 2018 Hoboken International Film Festival. This festival takes place in GREENWOOD LAKE, NY. It does not take place in Hoboken as the name suggests. I do not know why this is, but Greenwood Lake actually looks really nice, and I am sure it is way easier to find parking there than it is in Hoboken.

If you would like to purchase a ticket (only $11) you can do so here: https://tickets.vendini.com/ticket-software.html?t=tix&e=8ce42ceebe416b3fedd33e209f3d40a9&vqitq=6c233e63-75f5-4777-8b92-e52ff31d7ca7&vqitp=a279e709-909c-43b8-a97c-ef9f6890887d&vqitts=1524153327&vqitc=vendini&vqite=itl&vqitrt=Safetynet&vqith=04beff4ac83a3174752b038a37e37f88

If you want to buy tickets to any of the other events, screenings, award ceremony (they don’t say if we are nominated for anything until the day of the ceremony), etc. you can find all of that here: http://www.hobokeninternationalfilmfestival.com/2018-schedule-movies-events/

Congratulations to the outstanding cast & crew who made this movie a reality. Hope that you are able to attend.

Amazon Prime

CABIN

As you may be able to tell from the above image, “Cabin of Errors” is now officially available to watch on Amazon Prime. This is in addition being able to buy it on DVD on Amazon, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Target, Walmart, and digitally on Amazon, XBox, Google Play, and soon – iTunes.

Even prior to today, “Cabin” was our largest release so far… But today is a special day, because Amazon Prime is a big deal for us.

The cast & crew of “Cabin” worked so hard and did such an amazing job on this movie that we really wanted to make this our biggest project yet.

In November of 2016, Billy, Isaac, and I went to the 2016 American Film Market in Santa Monica. Our goal: To get distribution for “Cabin” and to introduce some major companies to Narrow Bridge. We had never attempted anything like this before… But we knew that starting with “Cabin,” we had to do more than just self-distribute on Amazon.

When asked by the numerous companies we met, we told them that our goal for the movie was to have it distributed as widely as possible — but with a special eye on Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Hulu… See, those three sites are HUGE for people looking to stream movies, and in our eyes, if we were able to get on one of those, people all over would be able to stream our film.

When we signed our deal with Summer Hill Films, we weren’t sure what the end result would be… There were no guarantees where “Cabin” would be distributed. But we held onto our hopes for one of those streaming platforms.

Time passed, and we didn’t know what would happen. Then, we were told that the movie would be available on DVD on Amazon, Google Play, and XBox. Not the height of our hopes, but still better than anything we’d gotten before. It was a win… But then slowly, the movie started to appear on other websites and stores.

And then Summer Hill announced that it would soon be available on Amazon Prime… And today is that day. Congratulations to the fantastic & hard working cast & crew that made this movie a reality. Y’all deserve this.

And please… If you have Prime, sign in… Search for “Cabin of Errors,” and give our little movie a watch. If you like it, give us a nice review. If you don’t like it, keep it between you and me, and we’ll try to do better next time. 😛
